He was a geologist & surveyor for the Mining Adminstration of the Kingdom of Hannover in the mines near Silbernaal when he decided to emigrate with the family of his wife. Before departure he was given a land grant in the Bayou area near Houston but, on arrival, found that it was too damp and fevers were rampant so he moved his family to Latium to be near his wife's family. About 1952, detesting farming and fearing for his sons education, he "stole" the boys and went to St. Louis where he apprenticed Richard to a merchant and Albert to a Doctor. Leaving the boys, he continued north where he found some mining activity and also taught German. He lived in Iowa for many years but obtained his citizenship while in Wisconsin. In his old age he returned to Texas and lived near his family in Gonzales where he is buried in the Masonic Cemetery.

The following letters were found in the home of Dr. F. E. Giesecke. Translator: Dr. H.U. Geyer, Kramerstrasse 8, 3000 Hannover, Germany.
Remarks of translator: The 2 pages contain handwritten copies of two farewell letters and one letter which Gustav Friedreich Karl Giesecke left behind for his parents when he silently disappeared from the farm of his family in the night of Jan 5-6 and March 9, 1852. The hand writing and the signature of the copy allows the identification of the Author. Gustav died a little more than one year after his disappearance.
Quote:
Father! Mother and Brothern! Good Bye! Good bye all you beloved ones because I go away from here, leaving you. You will forgive me, must forgive me, that I leave you in such a sudden way. It is not an act of malice, no, far away from that. I hope God will forgive me, and then you also must forgive me. When you read this I will be away quite a distance. I did this step with a firm conviction that it will be the best. Whatever the evil consequences, I will never regret. Never! I should write down many things, my heart is over filled, but I can not express what I feel. As I intend to take full responsibility on my decision I take over a difficult job. It will probably make you very sad but it may be decisive as to my future well of bad being. I am half mad, but I am determined and can't change it. God knows how it is for me to leave you. It has cost me quite some difficult hours. I have dully considered ther consequences which perhaps come up for me as well as for you. But I decided to execute, which indicates to you that my reasons are not peanuts. I hope that both you and I get used to it by time, because, although it may end up tragically, there is no necessity for it and after some time we can sit together happily again. However, in this respect, we have to leave that to God and the future, whatever will come out of it. I will bring you sorrow and concern. To tranquilize my mind I ask you and especially you, my dear Mother, not to always think and consider, how he is doing and where may he be and then to illustrate my situation with horror visions. Why so much concern what do I have to fear?! I am prepared for everything and I am determined. I am sdtill quite inexperienced in the world, but if I don't like it I will come back hoping that you will accept me again, will you? I am now no longer needed for your support but should the situation come up, that my support is needed (which hopefully never will occur) I wqill demonstrate that I am not without the feelings of thanks. I will then use every opportunity to prove the opposiste. I will write frequently and also hope that I hear from you occassionally. I can imagine that you certainly would like to know what made me to dare this step which may result in most important consequences. I would certainly like to explain the reason, but it would not help in this matter in the first place and secondly I intend not to say it to anybody, at least unless in case of emergency. However, this is only the reason which initiated the idea within me, but I have other reasons in addition, especially training (education) in mental and physical respect. It is not dissatisfaction, although I have been very dissatisfied occasionally, but never to such an extent to trigger such a step. The reason I have is more honest, I may say, and I hope I can stand up for it once in the face of God. I can hardly express my thought, therefore I do not write anything about this matter to you, although I would like to comfort you. One thing yet: I will stay honest. The period of my staying away I have planned to last about two years, i.e. for this period I want to be allowed offduty. God Bless you and me, amen! So bye then, all together. Be healthy and happy and don't mourn. It appears to me like a dream. Good Bye! Good Bye! Good Bye!
Your
Gustav
I will write 145 days from now.
(Gustav disappeared in the night between Jan 5-6,1852 [G.C.F. Giesecke]
Gustav returned in the night between Jan 10-11, 1852. In the morning he was found in his usual sleeping place. He brought with him the following letter which he could not drop because he came too late to the post office. This letter reads litterally.
January 9, 1852
All you dears!
Although I intended to write only after 14 days, I write already today. I could not find rest because of the uncertainty as to how you have lived up with everything and what you are doing. It is, by God, not a dream but reality that I left you, although I still do not realize it. It appears to me as if I was looking for a lost cow and would be with you again in 2 or 3 days. I ask you not to believe that I ran away because of malice or dissatisfaction. I thought that I will see something of the world and if I dislike it I would come back. I planned to stay away for two years, but as to my liking it up to now, it will not take that long. I am quite healthy and alright and nothing happened to me. I have been offered already some chances (some of them very interesting) for jobs, but I do not intend to be mishired as I can earn more money
